Bosanski.app Brings Nana to Your Phone: Language, Family, and the Connection to the Homeland

For many families in the Bosnian diaspora, the problem doesn’t start when children completely forget the Bosnian language.

It starts much earlier.

A child understands when their nana (grandmother) says something, but they respond in English. They know what “hajde,” “jedi,” or “dođi” means, but they don't know how to construct a full sentence. Parents tell themselves that Bosnian will come naturally, and then years pass by.

This is exactly the problem that the new app Bosanski.app attempts to solve, created specifically for people in the diaspora who want to learn or reactivate their family's language.

But instead of a classic professor, the app chose a much more familiar face.

Nana.

Waiting for the user on the screen is a digital Bosnian nana who teaches, encourages, corrects, and, in true Balkan style, sometimes applies a little "pressure." The idea is simple: learning a language should feel less like school and more like a conversation at the kitchen table.

The app’s main message speaks directly to that: “Learn Bosnian, and talk to your nana again.”

Bosanski.app currently offers more than 100 lessons and over 1,200 words, and the entire program uses ijekavica—the language most Bosnians actually hear at home: gdje, lijepo, mlijeko, kahva.

Lessons are short and designed for daily use. Users listen, repeat words, play games, review vocabulary, and practice pronunciation. There are also streaks, levels, and leaderboards with friends—elements familiar from major global language-learning apps.

The most interesting part, however, is again Nana.

The user can carry out a conversation with her in Bosnian. They can order coffee, talk about how their day went, or try to put a sentence together, while the app evaluates whether "Nana would understand you" and provides corrections without punishing the user for mistakes.

This makes Bosanski.app particularly interesting for a generation that often understands Bosnian better than they speak it.
